Another beautiful snow at Sutherland. Here are a few images from the back yard and creek bank. It’s shaping up to be a white Christmas!

Something is missing from this view. I must investigate.

There are very few trees in the East yards.

White Pines with fresh fallen snow.

A detail of the snow covered branches and pine needles.

Aha! The top half of the dead Sycamore Tree has fallen. The branches once obscured the bell tower in an eerie fashion.

Looking East. The College Avenue bridge.

The creek is low and extremely clear this time of year.

These delicate grasses create a bit of winter interest.

This image is inspired by Piet Oudolf. I hope to one day design plantings as well as he.

The form of the teak bench is extremely graphic against the white snow.

The long fruit of the Catalpa Tree resembles a slender bean pod. Each pod contains numerous flat seeds.

Many of the pods hang on to the branches throughout the winter. They make a chilling sound as they rustle in the wind.

Temps in mid 30s. The snow is beginning to melt.

It’s easy to forget that this property is located in the city. In the background, the Julia M. Carson Government Center.

Looking West. The Central Avenue bridge.

I was surprised to see several leaves still clinging to this small Japanese Maple.

A detail of the tiny leaves. This Maple is Acer palmatum ‘Kiyohime’.

Another fallen tree and gardening’s biggest lesson– nothing lasts forever.
