Everything goes with Black

Petunias are a very common and popular bedding plant. In recent years I have shied away from them for that very reason. But when breeders developed a new petunia named “Black Velvet,” I was more than intrigued. So much so, that I assigned myself a palette of black, grey, and purple for my patio containers. Of course, green and chartreuse would not be excluded.

I must admit, even I was impressed at the dramatic display this unusual color palette delivered. With only one container devoted to Black Petunias, it garnered quite a bit of attention all season long. Like all flowers known as black, they are actually a very deep inky purple which looks black. It’s taken years to develop the dark black color and I would say that it is still not perfected, but quite stunning none-the-less.

With summer nearing an end, my containers have endured very intense heat during the past weeks. Our current 60s and 70s are a welcomed change in temperature. The plants are coming into their own again. It’s fun to see how far along the plants have come since they were potted up last May. I share with you a few images of the exciting foliage from my patio containers.
